It all stems from my desire to unite and share movement and dance not only from the psycho-physical but also socio-cultural point of view: each person carries his own history and traditions and this is essential to start a bodily dialogue in the Sambaterapia. The Sambaterapia method includes a phase of relaxation, of Afro dance, of creative dance, of samba and a moment dedicated to dialogue at the end of the session. Sambatherapy must be a tool for people’s everyday life, in order to learn how to relax, to discover oneself, to give the body more rhythm in a creative way.
How did the research of Sambaterapia in rheumatic pathology come about?
I started with myself, suffering from arthrosis. Nothing is more authentic than that which comes from one’s own experience and one’s own experience.
For years I have done various physical practices, and I was looking for a discipline that could help me overcome the joint pains I suffered especially in some periods of the year. I started a discipline, but then I stopped. I looked at my body and I always thought: will there be a gym that I really like? Remembering that I am a dance movement therapist I started to teach myself. I began to challenge the pains with my excellent Brazilian music. The music gave me the right charge, and this is a pleasure! I immediately felt that pleasure made me go further, warm my body. I went where the pain was and I danced. After a while, I felt that there was no more pain and I felt freedom and joy for having overcome that state that had been with me for so long. Certainly, it is a discipline that must be adapted to each specific case, to the singularity and individuality of each one. The path stimulates everyone to come into contact with their difficulties by creating a relationship with their own criticality in the awareness of their limits: welcoming what we feel is the first step to transforming that reality, perhaps painful. There is our desire to try, to leave the free body in a new movement, and we can also listen to it by dancing.
In 2017 the Sambaterapia received the recognition of the UNESCO International Dance Council.
